Arsenal need Sebastien Haller if their bid for Dusan Vlahovic fails, says Rio Ferdinand…with the glowing form of the West Ham flop for Ajax in the Champions League and Eredivisie, making him a hit for the Gunners
- Arsenal want an attacker and have made Dusan Vlahovic their main transfer target
- Rio Ferdinand thinks Sebastien Haller deserves a second shot in the Premier League
- Haller has scored 22 goals in 24 matches in the Champions League and Eredivisie
- Ferdinand claims ex-West Ham hitman Haller is strong option behind Vlahovic
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta should be on alert to give prolific Ajax striker Sebastien Haller a second Premier League chance if the Gunners fail to land Dusan Vlahovic, Rio Ferdinand has argued.
Côte d’Ivoire striker Haller failed in the Premier League after joining West Ham for £45million from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019, scoring just three top goals in 17 appearances in his second season before joining the Dutch giants for an advantageous £22million .
The 27-year-old has had a spectacular season so far and is the surprising top scorer in the Champions League. He scored ten times in six matches to guide Ajax to a perfect qualification for the knockout phase.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta should look at Ajax sensation Sebastien Haller, says Rio Ferdinand
Haller produced one of the misses of West Ham’s 2020-21 campaign against Man United
The centre-forward has one goal more in the league than Bayern goal machine Robert Lewandowski and is three times behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, aided by a game against Sporting Lisbon, making him only the second player to score four goals in his Champions League debut after Dutch legend Marco van Basten.
Haller has also scored 12 goals in 17 Eredivisie appearances to attract the attention of clubs across Europe – and former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand believes he would succeed at Arsenal.
Ferdinand responded to a suggestion that Arteta’s ideal targets are Brentford hotshot Ivan Toney and Roma forward Tammy Abraham by telling FIVE: ‘I think Haller would be very good for you.’
Speaking to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Ferdinand also seemed to acknowledge that Arsenal are on the hunt for the highly regarded Swedish striker Alexander Isak of Real Sociedad.
The star scored a stunning acrobatic goal against Crystal Palace shortly before leaving the club
Arteta is chasing Serie A top scorer Vlahovic and would prefer Fiorentina during the January transfer window.
Fiorentina has suggested they are open to offers and publicly pressured Vlahovic to decide his future, with the 21-year-old’s contract expiring in June 2023.
Haller is currently with Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was substituted on Wednesday in their opening 1-0 win against Equitorial Guinea in Douala.
The former frontman of Auxerre and Utrecht signed a four-year contract with Ajax in January 2021.
That move came a month after Haller scored a rare top goal for the Hammers – a bicycle kick against Crystal Palace that won the Premier League Goal of the Month.
