Chelsea: Andreas Christensen out of Man City clash with Covid

Thomas Tuchel STILL gets a defensive headache as centre-back Andreas Christensen is out with Covid on the eve of Chelsea’s first-class clash with Manchester City

Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen is the latest player in the Blues to test positive for Covid, preventing him from playing against title challengers Man City on Saturday.

Boss Thomas Tuchel is already without long-term absentees Ben Chilwell and Reece James in defence, with centre-back Trevoh Chalobah also out.

Speaking to media on Friday afternoon, he confirmed that Denmark international Christensen has now been sidelined with a positive test as he enters a period of isolation.

Tuchel’s squad has been ravaged by positive Covid tests in the past month, with Mateo Kovacic, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner all having to isolate in recent weeks.

Veteran defender Thiago Silva has also been caught by the virus, but he has completed his isolation and is battling City.

The Blues have recalled Kenedy from his Flamengo loan spell to battle their wing back injury – although Tuchel said one player is ‘not the answer’.

The Blues are left with back problems after Chilwell was ruled out for the season following knee surgery and James was sidelined for two months with a hamstring injury.

Due to the injuries, Tuchel has only one recognized fullback in Marcos Alonso and the Chelsea boss has decided to bring Kenedy back to Stamford Bridge.

“Kenedy is back and I’m very happy with it,” Tuchel said.

“It’s a huge opportunity for him to make his mark at this club and this team. I won’t talk like Kenedy is THE solution, but he is a solution.’

Chelsea went into the game in second place in the Premier League, 10 points behind runaway league-leader City.

When asked whether a defeat at the Etihad Stadium would put City out of sight in the title race, Tuchel accepted that it is a possibility.

The German coach added: ‘Maybe, who knows. They have coped better with injuries and the Covid situation.

“Maybe it’s luck or they’re doing better. They have had fewer injuries and missed fewer weeks. They didn’t suffer as much from Covid as we did for many weeks, this is the huge difference.”
