Jamie Dornan describes being quarantined in Australia while his father died of covid

Jamie Dornan has detailed being quarantined in Australia while his father died more than 10,000 miles away in Belfast.

The actor, 39, was isolated at a hotel before filming The Tourist in Australia and had four days left of his quarantine when he received the devastating news that his father Jim had died of the coronavirus.

But with tough travel and quarantine restrictions, he was unable to fly back to his native Northern Ireland to be with his family during the heartbreaking time, with Jamie describing his 2021 as the ‘worst’ and most difficult’ year of his to live.

World-renowned obstetrician Jim died in March at age 73 after contracting the virus after being hospitalized for routine knee surgery.

And Jamie, who hadn’t seen his father in 18 months due to the lockdown and the shooting, shared how he understood the trauma so many people had endured during the global pandemic as he dealt with his own devastating loss.

He told The sun: ‘It has been a cruel time for many reasons and for many people. We’re all just trying to drive out and get out the other side—hoping we’ve got our heads intact.”

The lead actor was recently acclaimed for his role in Sir Kenneth Brannagh’s Belfast, which depicts a family’s experience during The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

And Jim, a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist in Belfast and even had a picture with Kenneth at home, was proud of his son’s role in the film, but sadly isn’t around to see it anymore.

With the heartbreaking loss of his father, the 50 Shades Of Gray star admitted that 2021 had turned out to be “the worst year…and the hardest” of his life, adding: “I’m early in my life and now, to much pain and loss.’

The early loss he referred to was the death of his mother Lorna from pancreatic cancer when he was just 16, with Jim helping him come to terms with the loss by telling his boy, “Don’t let this be the thing that defines you.”

In Jamie’s latest film Belfast, set in the 1960s, he plays a character named Pa, who works in England and considers moving his family there amid the conflicts.

And Jamie admitted that the storyline was very personal to him, because it hurts him to be away from his young daughters for a long time.

The actor shares daughters Dulcie, eight, Elva, five, and two-year-old Alberta with wife Amelia Warner, 39, whom he married in 2013.

He said, “I think I really understand what it’s like to go away, often for the benefit of the family – to work, to provide. Every step I take since becoming a father is my career for them. That’s all I really care about. I am so lucky to have three healthy little girls. I just miss them so much.’

Elsewhere, Jamie revealed last month that he was in constant competition with Eddie Redmayne as the couple lived together at the start of their careers.

The actor spoke out about their time-sharing in Los Angeles in 2009 during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show.

The star, who appeared on the show to promote his upcoming miniseries The tourist, admitted there was some “jealousy” when they auditioned for roles, but they always wished each other the best of luck.

Jamie appeared via video link to discuss his new show and said: ‘You’d like to think there’s no jealousy, but there’s always friendly competition.

‘[We were] constantly standing up for the same thing and preparing each other for auditions and saying, “Good luck, I hope you’re doing well there.”‘

Last January, the duo spoke about their time together – revealing they had so little work when they lived together as roommates that they resorted to making tableware.
