“I can understand very well that he wants to play. I would love to have him on board as one of the top three goalkeepers.

“He’s an age where you should be playing regularly, but we’re in three leagues. I understand his desire to get regular playing time and become number 1 elsewhere in the Premier League.”

Van de Beek continued to play a minor role under United’s interim manager after being limited by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and remains concerned about his place in the Dutch squad ahead of this year’s World Cup.

Rangnick added: “It’s the same situation with Dean. I am happy to have him on the team. He took on Aston Villa (Monday in the FA Cup) and did well. He always performs at a high level in training.

“I had a chat with him two weeks ago after training and advised him to stay until the end of the season.

“Of course he wants to play with the World Cup in the winter. Louis van Gaal has told him that in order to be a regular starter, he has to play for his team.

“I can understand his will to play very well, but on the other hand we have a lot of competition in our roster in those positions.”
