The attack came just six days after Cavendish suffered two broken ribs and a collapsed lung in a horrific crash in Belgium.

Mr Cavendish said: ‘As you will surely understand, this incident has left our family extremely upset – not only me and Peta but also our children, who feared for their lives and are now grappling with the consequences.

“No one should experience the kind of violence and threats against us, let alone in a family home – a place where everyone should feel safe.

“The items taken are just material goods and our priority right now is to make sure we all recover as a family from the incident, and we know this will likely take some time.

“We would like to thank Essex Police for the very prompt response and the professionalism and focus they have clearly put into the investigation.”
