Channel Seven has received a rating boost after the leak of an off-air expletive by Rebecca Maddern and Mike Amor about tennis star Novak Djokovic.

And now a TV pundit has revealed why viewers are so awed by the gaffe.

Speak with News CorpTV Tonight editor David Knox says the “chemistry” and “authenticity” of the two anchors shone through.

Australians like to know you’re ‘one of us’ (so) it could work to their advantage. If it’s not authentic, the public will see right through it,” he said.

“I don’t think Seven should worry because the two presenters come across as friends chatting.

“These two have shown that they are not fake and actually have a friendship – that is not always the case in TV land,” he added.

More viewers tuned in to 7News to see if Maddern or Amor would address the leak during Wednesday’s 6 p.m. news bulletin — which they didn’t.

Wednesday night’s bulletin saw an increase of 40,000 viewers compared to Tuesday night.

The 6pm Wednesday bulletin had 301,000 viewers from across Melbourne tuning in. By comparison, Tuesday’s bulletin at 6 p.m. had 261,000.

Seven’s 6:30 p.m. news that same night held 291,000 more viewers.

The ratings still lagged behind Nine news, which usually dominates the ratings for news in the major metro cities.

Nine News Melbourne had 322,000 viewers for their 6pm bulletin on Wednesday evenings.

Network sources at Seven have since accused the subtitling company Ai-Media as being primarily responsible for the leak.

In the footage, which went viral on Tuesday night, newscaster Maddern and veteran broadcaster Amor criticized Djokovic after a court ruled he could stay in Australia.

Maddern said, “Any way you look at it, Novak Djokovic is a lying, sneaky bastard. ‘

Amor added, “That’s it, I mean, he’s an asshole. He got a damn excuse and then fell over his own damn lies. It’s just what happens, right, that’s what happened.

Maddern has since apologized to her bosses for mis-expressing the world’s number one.
